Nigeria to Improve Distance Education

Nigeria is looking to bolster its distance educational infrastructure through a tie-up between its university system and that of Georgia in the US. The National Universities Commission (NUC) is effecting the collaboration that will address issues such as distance education, research, and capacity building. As part of this association, a delegation from the US Faculty Development Seminar is in the African nation right now. They are involved in meetings with Ministers of Education and visits to the Universities of Abuja, Jos, Lagos, and Duala. They also attended a seminar on “Management of Distance Education in Nigerian Universities.” All Africa reports:

Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola said no fewer than 30,000 students are enrolled in different distance learning programs in the country. The University of Abuja topped the list with 15, 000 students, while the remaining 15, 000 were shared between the universities of Lagos and Ibadan.
