Perfectly Designed Online Courses
I’m taking a design and art course. So what’s new about that? Just that it’s one that’s taught completely online! And before you think I’ve gone completely nuts, check out the Studio Art School based in the United Kingdom.
The institute is a one-of-its-kind school, offering students all over the world the chance to develop and nurture their creative skills with complete flexibility and at the same quality as the courses offered at any regular art school. The brainchild of Michael Stewart and his colleagues, the Studio Art School holds the distinction of being the only institution in the UK that is approved to offer the Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design) through distance learning methods.
A digital camera and a computer with an Internet connection are all you need to enroll in this course, besides an aptitude for art and an eye for design. All the courses are nationally accredited and are entirely Web-based. The school caters to the needs of students who are hampered by limited working space and a tight materials budget. Interactions between students and instructors take place via message boards in students’ personal online studio spaces.
A recent venture of the three-year-old institute is the series of online seminars planned in conjunction with the British Council in Moscow to offer students in Russia the chance to study art and design in the United Kingdom.

Drawing Animators Online
Do you have a flair for the creative? Are you computer savvy? Are your brush strokes inspired by a stroke of genius? If you answered yes to all the above questions, a course in animation might be right up your street. You can become a master animator along the lines of Chuck Jones by enrolling at the Animation Mentor Internet School. All courses are taught online by instructors who are renowned in the animation industry. All you need to complete an 18-month course is a capital investment of $13,000, a web camera, animation software, and a drawing pad. While a background in visual arts is helpful, it is not mandatory. Professional reasons or just to draw out your creative streak, this course is a must for aspiring animators.

Online Courses for Art History Enthusiasts
Two new courses in the history of arts are now available online for those who cannot afford to leave their homes in pursuit of an arts degree. The Department of Continuing Education (DACE) of the Swansea University in Wales is offering two 10-week courses __ Western Art of the Middle Ages and The Visual Art of the Ancient World __ through the University’s Blackboard virtual learning environment. Prospective students living in the areas of the old Lliw Valley, Swansea, Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and Rhondda Cynon Taf, can avail these courses free of charge, while outsiders can sign up for them at £40 a module. IC Wales reports:
"DACE’s virtual learning environment provides a space for lecturers to put notes, links to books, live chat rooms and a student discussion board. It’s a great way for people to enjoy learning if they can get access to an Internet connection," said Clare Woodward, e-learning developer for Dace.
EDMC Solves Space Problem
Education Management Corp. (EDMC) has solved its space problem by leasing 40,000 square feet of space at 1400 Penn Avenue from Squirrel Hill-based The Buncher Company. EDMC’s online higher education division, which was started five years ago with just a handful of students, now serves over 8,000 learners and employs 275 support staff and management personnel in its offices, which are currently located at three different locations. The new space will come in handy since the company plans to recruit 110 more employees by the end of February, said David Misra, Public Relations Manager for EDMC’s online higher education division.
The EDMC runs several schools including Art Institute Online (AIO), Argosy University, Brown Mackie College, Miami International, South University and Western State University. The AIO has been largely responsible for the dramatic growth of EDMC’s online higher education division and offers programs in various arts and designs, fashion and retail management, advertising, and media arts and animation.
